MAC Address Discovery

MAC Address Discovery can correlate IP Addresses and Physical Addresses. The MAC Address Discovery tool can discover the MAC addresses for the devices that are physically attached to your local subnet.  You can use Network Sonar and the Switch Port Mapper to discover MAC addresses of devices connected to remote subnets.

MAC Address Discovery can tell you the MAC addresses, Hardware Manufacturer, IP address, and hostnames of the devices connected to your subnet.

Getting Started

Select the local subnet from the drop down list. If your PC is only attached to one subnet, then you will only have one choice in the drop down list.

The best method of discovering the MAC Addresses for other subnets is to place the SolarWinds tools on a laptop and take the laptop to the remote subnet and plug it in.  However, you can use Network Sonar and the Switch Port Mapper to discover MAC addresses of devices connected to remote subnets.

Click on the  button to start the discovery.

Exporting from MAC Address Recovery

MAC Address Discovery can export the scan results into a number of file formats.

When you export from MAC Address Discovery, a dialog box allows you to select the information that should be included in the exported file.

Comma Delimited File

This format is suitable for importing into other programs, spreadsheets or databases. Each field is separated by a comma. Comment lines begin with a pound (#) character. Fields with spaces or special characters will be enclosed in quotation marks.

Plain Text File

When exporting to a Plain Text File, MAC Address Recovery simply dumps the output to a text file without any special formatting. Each field is separated by a tab.

HTML File

The HTML export method creates an HTML file in the same format as the MAC Address Recovery table.

Microsoft Excel must be installed on your machine in order for this export method to work.

Publish to the Web

Copying directly from MAC Address Recovery

MAC Address Recovery also allows copying to the Windows clipboard directly. Simply highlight any area and select "Copy Selection" from the "Edit" menu.

You can also select "Copy All" from the "Edit" menu to copy all DNS Audit results to the Windows clipboard.

MAC Address Discovery Preferences

Columns

The MAC Address Discovery display all or only selected data elements.  The window on the left displays all of the possible discovery fields.  By clicking on the  button. The added fields will appear in the right window.  By clicking on the "UP" and "DOWN" arrow you can change the order of the columns as they appear on the results screen.

MAC Addresses

The MAC Address is often long and hard to read.  If you desire we have added a feature whereby you can display them in a "dotted" format.  MAC Address 00B498A39A34 would appear as 00B4.98A3.9A34 in the results screen.
